Descrption
YG Entertainment (YG 엔터테인먼트) is a South Korean multinational entertainment agency. The company operates as a record label, talent agency, music production company, event management and concert production company, and music publishing house and a number of subsidiary ventures under a separate public traded company, YG Plus, which includes a clothing line, a golf management agency, and a cosmetics brand. It was established in March 1996 by Yang Hyun-suk, a former member of K-pop group Seo Taiji and Boys as Hyun Planning (현기획). The company's first act was the hip-hop trio Keep Six. The group did not gain success and disbanded the same year. After Keep Six, the company changed its named to MF Planning and in 1998 to Yang Goon Planning, after Yang Hyun-suk's nickname Yang Goon (양군). In 2001, YG changed to its current name, YG Entertainment, which was named from the initials of Yang Goon. In 2005 it established the YG Underground label. In 2014, YG acquired T Entertainment's staff and actors and then the modelling agency KPlus to expand its acting division. L Capital Asia, an equity of LVMH, become the second-largest investor in YG with an 11.5%. Also in 2014 YG expanded into the beauty industry and created its cosmetics brand Moonshot. In 2015 YG founded two sub-labels, HIGHGRND, to be led by Epik High's Tablo and The Black Label, led by producers Teddy Park and Kush. In 2016 Tencent and Weiying Technology became shareholders with Weiying owning 8.2% and Tencent a 4.5%. HIGHGRND was closed after Epik High terminated their contracts with YG Entertainment in October 2018. On November 16, 2020, The Black Label was converted to an associate company status. In January 2021, Big Hit Entertainment and its tech division beNX bought 17.9% shares in YG Entertainment's subsidiary YG Plus.
